A rotten egg smell in your water almost always means hydrogen sulfide gas, but the source is not always the same. Sulfur bacteria, well water conditions, a reaction inside your water heater, and even iron bacteria can all produce a similar odor, and each one calls for a different fix.

Hydrogen sulfide is the gas responsible for the smell itself. It can occur naturally in groundwater, particularly in areas with certain soil and rock conditions. In smaller amounts it may only be noticeable when water sits for a while or when it is heated.
Sulfur bacteria are a related but separate cause. They live in low-oxygen environments such as wells, plumbing systems, and water heaters, feeding on naturally occurring sulfur compounds and producing hydrogen sulfide gas as a byproduct. Once established in a well or a water heater tank, they can be difficult to fully clear without professional treatment.
Fort Myers and the surrounding Southwest Florida counties draw water from a mix of municipal supply and private wells. Homes on well water are more likely to notice sulfur odors, since groundwater has more contact with soil, rock, and organic material than a treated municipal supply. This is common in parts of Lee, Collier, and Charlotte counties, where groundwater draws from layers with naturally occurring sulfur and iron content.
Iron on its own does not usually smell like rotten eggs, but iron bacteria can. These bacteria feed on iron and manganese in the water and can produce a similar odor along with a reddish, slimy residue. When an odor and staining show up together, iron bacteria is worth ruling out.
One of the most common causes of a sulfur smell is a reaction inside the water heater. Many tanks use a magnesium or aluminum anode rod to prevent corrosion, and that rod can react with sulfate in the water to produce hydrogen sulfide gas, particularly in tanks that sit unused for stretches of time. A plumber can inspect the water heater and its anode rod to check whether this is the source.
A rotten egg smell rarely means the same thing twice. The only way to know for certain is to test the water and inspect the water heater.
Where the smell shows up is one of the strongest clues to the cause.
Cold water only is less common and may point to a localized issue in the cold line or a specific fixture. One fixture only often means the smell is coming from the drain rather than the water, since biofilm inside an old drain can produce a similar odor. A plumber can confirm which one applies by testing each fixture and reviewing the plumbing setup.

It is tempting to buy a filter based on the smell or appearance of the water alone, but sulfur odors and iron staining can come from several different sources, and each one calls for a different type of system. A conditioner built for hardness will not necessarily address sulfur bacteria. A carbon filter that works for low levels of hydrogen sulfide may not be enough for a well with heavier bacteria activity.

Not every rotten egg smell comes from sulfur, and not every case has the same cause. This usually points to the water heater rather than the water supply. The only way to know what is actually in your water, and whether it needs attention, is through water testing. If you are unsure, it is best to have the water tested and talk with a licensed plumber before continuing to use it as normal.
If the smell is limited to a single faucet, it is often coming from the drain rather than the water itself. Biofilm buildup inside an old drain, or a worn aerator, can produce an odor that seems similar to a water quality issue. Checking whether the smell follows the water or stays with the fixture is one of the first steps in figuring out the real cause.
Iron bacteria and sulfur bacteria can produce similar signs, including odor, staining, and a slimy residue in toilet tanks or on fixtures. Because the two can look alike and sometimes occur together, a water test is the most reliable way to confirm which one, or both, are present in your well.
